Founding VDRC: How the Consortium Began
The Vulvar Dermatoses Research Consortium began with a simple idea: bring together people who share an interest in vulvar dermatology. At the 2023 AAD Vulvar Forum, a conversation about connecting clinicians and researchers interested in vulvar disease inspired Dr. Melissa Mauskar to place a sign-up sheet outside the conference room. Twenty people attended the first gathering. Within less than a year, that group grew to more than 90 members. As the community grew, members helped shape the informal gathering into the Vulvar Dermatoses Research Consortium (VDRC). Drs. Christina Kraus, Alicia Little, Melissa Mauskar, and Olushola Akinshemoyin Vaughn founded the Consortium around a shared commitment to collaboration, research, and improving care for people affected by vulvar disease. VDRC also welcomed trainees into its leadership from the beginning. The inaugural Board of Directors included resident representative Dr. Sydney Rivera and medical student representative Madeline Ngo, creating opportunities for the next generation to contribute to and grow within the field. |
